Hi, I'm Meaghan! I started Spotty Dog Hiking out of my love for dogs & hiking in the hopes of providing a fun and enriching adventure for your dogs during the week! I have experience with a whole spectrum of dogs; from chihuahua, to borzoi, to all kinds of mutts! I started my journey with dogs back in high school working for neighbors that bred brittanys and weimeraners- helping them clean kennels, tend to dogs, and even helped with puppy raising and vet trips! I spent some time managing a doggy daycare where I really took the time to learn and understand how to read and respond to dog behavior and body language. After the company I worked for went out of business, I was inspired to start my own, and thus, Spotty Dog Hiking was born!
To the left & right you'll see photos of the Spotty Dogs, Maisy & Murphy. These girls are the inspiration for my little business! They are 4 and 2 year old dalmatians, and if your pup is a group hiker or in need of some friends, you might see their spotty little faces joining in for some fun and socialization! They are friendly and gentle with everypup they meet, and love to run, sniff, and be chased! They love having a mom who hikes for a living and provides them with many long lasting doggy friendships! Outside of Spotty Dog Hiking, they like to dabble in nosework classes, tricks, swim lessons, and FastCAT runs! They also LOVE a good pup cup and a roll in the grass! WOOF!
$40 | 1 Hour | On or Off Leash | Solo or Group Hike
(+$10 per dog in same household)
Schedule- We run on a weekly recurring schedule, so every week on the same day(s) and time(s), I will come to your home to pick up your pup, and then return them home after our 1 hour sniffari! We try to keep our distance to/from the trail under 5-10 minutes, and we try to visit a different trail each time so that the adventure is always fresh and new! I have a long list of all the trails in the area, and rotate through them regularly and depending on weather and potential trail conditions!
Hiking Options- We have different hiking options for your pup. They can hike on or off leash. On leashers will be walked on a 10 or 15ft line so that they have the most freedom to go at their own pace while still being attached to me. Sometimes I'll even let them use the 30ft line if we are in a large fielded area! Your dog can also do a pseudo off leash hike with a dragging long line attached to a harness while we work together on their recall and trail manners to eventually become fully off leash if that is something you are interested in for them. For on leashers- I no longer take dogs that excessively pull on the leash. Off leash dogs must either have good voice recall and trail manners, and/or be trained with an ecollar. We practice good trail etiquette, and do not approach or jump on other people or dogs without permission.
Pups can hike solo, or I can group them with other dogs in your area. For group hikes, we stick to small packs of no more than 4-5 dogs max. I feel that this is safer, more relaxing for the dogs, and more courteous to other trail goers and wildlife.
Gear- All dogs must be wearing a collar with identification attached to hike. If for some reason your collar is misplaced, I do have some spares in the car with a tag containing my own info as a backup until you can find or replace yours. I do require that your on leash or drag leash pups wear a harness, however I have plenty of harnesses in sizes XS-L on hand at all times, so there is no need to have your own unless you have a giant breed. We use long lines to hike with, and sometimes they can get caught around trees or roots, so we attach to the harness to keep the leash from pulling at the neck in those situations.
Report Cards- After each hike is complete, I send a little report card through our scheduling app that details if your pup peed/pooped, got treats/water, notes on their behavior / any unique happenings if needed, and LOTS of photos! One of my favorite parts of the day is taking photos of your pets having fun- so that you get to experience their adventures through them as well! I post my favorites to our Facebook and Instagram daily, sometimes I upload videos to the stories, and all the photos on this website are by me during our times together as well. If you do not have social medias, I also try to update the Gallery Page here every so often!
Vehicle Details- All dogs must be comfortable riding to/from the trail in a safe and secure Ruffland car kennel. My vehicle has the seats removed and platforms built to hold four kennels. Two extra larges with side door entries, and two larges behind them with trunk entry. Each kennel has double doors for extra ventilation and an extra exit point in the event one door becomes compromised or trapped in an accident. Keeping the dogs secure also keeps them from playing or arguing over space in the vehicle, and becoming a distraction to me while driving. It also prevents them from booking it out of the car before being leashed up as soon a door opens into a busy parking lot! We love our car kennels, and the dogs learn to love them too… after all they teleport them right to the trails and fun! ☺
Ruffland has some testimonials on their durability here!
To the left & right you'll see some happy pups in the kennels! Each kennel has a primo pad in the bottom with a soft bath mat on top for extra comfort! ♥
The two pups on the right were so excited that they both tried to jump in together! They were separated for the actual drive. ;)
We will walk rain or shine, however we do keep safety in mind and will not walk during the following conditions: heavy rain, thunder/lightning storms, extreme wind, sleet/hail, severe snowstorms, below 0°F, or over 95°F.
In the event that there is inclement weather during your scheduled walk or hike, we will cancel and I can come by to provide a 15min potty break if needed.
Trail conditions can vary greatly day to day depending on the weather and seasons, especially here in MA. We get a lot of mud in this area! The on-leash hikers rarely get too dirty, but please be aware that your off leash pup might come home wet and muddy sometimes! I do have towels in the car for a towel dry, and if your hose is out during the warm months I can give them a spray down as well. During colder months I will not spray them down, and will stick to towels and possibly wet paper towels if they do something silly like roll in poop, like the goofball to the left here! 😆
During hot sunny days we try to stick to shaded trails, especially with clean water sources such as the river or streams. I do let them get into the water to swim and play when it is safe to do so. The hikes are for them after all, and letting them just be dogs is the most enriching experience for them! ♥
